6 reasons to claim DE Kony Ealy
By Ryan Talbot | Contributing writer
Kony Ealy finds himself without a team after being released by the New England Patriots. Ealy will go on waivers and the Buffalo Bills should consider putting in a waiver claim. Buffalo has the league’s 10th priority so it’s possible another team claims Ealy, but here are six reasons why the Bills should at least attempt to claim the defensive end.
Previous experience with Sean McDermott
There wouldn’t be much of a learning curve for Ealy with the Bills. Before being traded to the Patriots, Ealy spent his first three seasons with the Carolina Panthers. With Sean McDermott as his defensive coordinator, Ealy would rack up 14 sacks in his first three seasons in the league.
Bills are always looking for talent
Bills fans have all heard GM Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott state that the team is always looking to add talented players to their roster. Ealy is a perfect example of a player that fits what the defense is doing and could give Buffalo a terrific depth option behind starters Shaq Lawson and Jerry Hughes.
If the Bills want to add a third round compensatory draft pick, they need to release three players. The likeliest players would be Ryan Davis, Andre Holmes and Vlad Ducasse. Davis has played decently on the field during the preseason, but swapping him out for Ealy may be an easy decision if Buffalo is also willing to part ways with Holmes and Ducasse.
Ealy is in the final year of his rookie contract. If the Bills were to claim him, they’d be adding a player with a cap hit of less than $1 million. It’s an affordable deal for a player that has performed well in the past under McDermott.
