Apple is on a Hiring Spree for Map Experts Skilled in Geospatial Information Services and beyond

During his opening statement covering Apple’s fiscal Q3 financials, CEO Tim Cook talked about the benefits coming to iOS 11 this fall and one of the features he highlighted was “richer and more powerful Maps.” CNBC now reports that Apple has been on a huge hiring spree for those with experience in maps with more than 70 listings. The listings note that they’re looking for people with skills in “geospatial information services,” “navigational aids” and “fleet management.”

The report further notes that “Adding more map-tech talent to its ranks won’t just help the company make Apple Maps more competitive with Google Maps. The new hires could also help Apple deliver on two big promises: to become an important player in augmented reality and ‘autonomous systems.’

Improving and developing new map capabilities could also, obviously, help Apple finally come out with ‘core technology’ for the self-driving car market.”
