A missing persons report has been filed for Jeff Power, organizer and founder of Avalon Expo, a sci-fi, fantasy, gaming and comic convention held at Mile One Centre in St. John’s this past weekend.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary confirmed Monday the report was filed Sunday night, Aug. 27, at 9 p.m., the final night of the expo, also known as AvEx. They will not say who filed the report.
Power, who lives in St. John’s, last posted to his Facebook account on Saturday, Aug. 26, at 1:23 a.m.
He posted a picture of himself and featured AvEx guest Rene Auberjonois, the actor who plays the character Odo on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, after Auberjonois’s arrival at St. John’s airport Friday night.
Power’s disappearance comes amid claims that the event was disorganized and its bills were unpaid.
Auberjonois took to Twitter Sunday to express his discontent.
Here @AvalonExpo Something fishy going on. Promoter Jeff Power seems to have disappeared. Not good!
“We’re being stiffed and [Power has] run out on the hotel bill,” he tweeted.
Sci-Fi on the Rock posted a statement on its Facebook page saying it was unaffiliated with AvEx and expressed sympathies to all those affected by the upheaval. The group wrote that it was also waiting for details about the weekend.
Ohhhhhhh no. Hasn’t happened in a long time to us, but….he should have at least manned up and apologized. https://t.co/YjiBRVFfKD
This was the third year for Avalon Expo, and the first time it was held at Mile One. Last year’s event was at the Centre des Grand-Vents. The year before, it was at Re/Max Centre.
Other AvEx guests this year included Colin Baker, who played Doctor Who from 1984 to 1986; Linda Ballantyne, the English voice of Sailor Moon; and Lily Hunter Cosplay, a well-known Canadian cosplay prop and costume maker.
