The current best-selling Buffalo Bills jerseys, according to NFLshop.com, contain a number of mainstays, as well as a few surprises.
Taking the top spot is LeSean McCoy, followed by Bills legend and Hall-of-Famer Bruce Smith. Richie Incognito rounds out the top three.
Quarterbacks Jim Kelly and Tyrod Taylor populate the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Thurman Thomas takes the sixth spot.
No. 7, free agent signee Micah Hyde and No. 8, first round draft pick Tre’Davious White may come as a surprise, considering they place above two fan favorites, Sammy Watkins and Kyle Williams, who round out the top 10.
According to the attendees of Bills training camp Tuesday morning at St. John Fisher College, these numbers — and the reasons why fans wear the jerseys they do — aren’t always as advertised.
Avery Munger of Irondequoit came with daughter Ashlyn, 6, and son Mason, 8, wearing a Lee Evans jersey.
“(The number) 83 is 83, at least from the front, so I’d like to think I’m rooting for Lee Evans and Andre Reed at the same time,” said Avery, who has been a Bills fan for the past 30 years.
Ashlyn wore her LeSean McCoy jersey because she’s a big fan of “Shady” and that she can wear it on the Fourth of July because it’s red, white and, blue. Mason wore his Sammy Watkins jersey as a self-proclaimed former fan before “defecting to another team that we shall not talk about,” according to Dad.
“And their mom — my wife — is a Giants fan, so we don’t talk about her,” Avery said jokingly.
At Tuesday morning’s practice, the distribution of McCoy, Watkins, and Taylor jerseys in the crowd blended with a plethora of Kelly, Thomas and Smith apparel. Of course, there was still a sprinkle of not-yet “so old it’s cool” JP Losman, EJ Manuel and Roscoe Parrish gear that seems to come out of the woodwork every football season.
Six-year-old Ike Ziemba of Hampton, Virginia, got his EJ Manuel jersey “when EJ was around,” “years” ago. His 10-year-old brother Peter has had his Jim Kelly jersey his “whole, entire life” but is just now able to wear it because he had to grow into it.
What it comes down to for many, like Dustin Reisman of Holley, who donned a Cornelius “Biscuit” Bennett jersey, is “once a Bills fan, always a Bills fan,” no matter who or what attendees decide to leave their homes wearing.
“I had this signed when we went to a Red Wings game Jim Kelly was at while we were engaged,” said Jennifer Reisman, who came with husband Dustin and two-week-old son, Dustin Jr., wearing an autographed Jim Kelly jersey. “And now we have our son in his little Bills jersey.”
“Gotta start him early,” Dustin chimed in.
