Bills Rookie Camp Football
12 observations from day 13 of Buffalo Bills camp
Pittsford, N.Y. — The new look Buffalo Bills practiced for the first time on Sunday.
Gone are Sammy Watkins and Ronald Darby after the blockbuster tradeson Friday.Enter Jordan Matthews and E.J. Gaines. With just a few practices left at St. John Fisher, the Bills are trying to break in a key piece on offense and defense.
Here are our notes from practice.
Jordan Matthews gets hurt
In his first practice in Buffalo, wide receiver Jordan Matthews suffered a chest injury. He finished practice but was under evaluation afterward. He was heabily involved in his first practice. He got four targets and caught one pass while working with the first and second-team offenses.
Nathan Peterman moves up the depth chart
After an impressive preseason opener, Bills rookie quarterback Nathan Peterman got the bulk of the reps with the second-team offense on Sunday. T.J. Yates worked with the third team. Peterman had an impressive practice. He went 12-for-18 passing, which included a two-minute drill in which he went 5-for-8 with an impressive touchdown to Brandon Tate. If Peterman keeps this up, he could be the Bills’ backup to start the season.
Brandon Tate makes the play of camp
Speaking of Tate, he made the catch of camp on Sunday. During a Hail Mary drill, Peterman lofted a pass to the end zone. It looked like it was sailing over Tate’s head, but he jumped up and reached back for a one-handed catch. It was reminiscent of Odell Beckham Jr.’s famous catch from a few years ago.
Bills still concerned about Cordy Glenn
The Bills are hopeful that left tackle Cordy Glenn can be ready for the season opener. He missed practice again on Sunday with foot soreness that has plagued him since the spring. Dion Dawkins would play left tackle in Week 1 if Glenn is not ready to play.
