Car owners unaware of deadly airbags

Five major car companies have failed to alert car owners of potentially deadly airbags, the nation’s consumer watchdog has found.

The Takata “alpha” airbag, fitted in Toyota, Mazda, BMW, Lexus and Subaru cars, has failed in up to 50 per cent of deployments, a Choice investigation has revealed.

“With a failure rate as high as one in two, car owners have a right to know the true nature of the danger they face,” Choice spokesman Tom Godfrey said in a statement on Tuesday.
