A man was taken into custody by the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office after authorities said he stole and crashed two cars Tuesday night.

According to deputies, the man stole his mother’s car and crashed it in a field at the dead end of Butternut Park Court in Carlisle Township.

Deputies said the man — wearing just underwear, a shirt and socks — walked through the field and some trees to U.S. Route 20 where a good Samaritan saw him and stopped to help.

At this point, deputies had gotten calls about the man and were on the way, but before authorities arrived, the man stole the car of the person who was trying to help and fled.

Deputies said the man drove from Route 20 to Route 511 where he crashed into a patio furniture set in the backyard of a home near Route 511 and Oberlin Road in Oberlin and kept going until eventually coming to rest in a ditch.

The man had some cuts and scratches from walking through the field, but besides that was not injured, deputies said.

As of 10 p.m., deputies were collecting witness statements and said more information would be released later.
