Tesla Model S vs BMW i Vision Dynamics electric car comparison
In the luxury electric car segment Tesla currently rules the roost.
Both the Model S and Model X are the class leaders in terms of range and technology and no real direct rivals to challenge this position yet.
BMW could be ready to spoil the party though.
At the Frankfurt Motor Show 2017 the German car manufacturer revealed a new electric car concept, the i Vision Dynamics, which looks to be a credible rival to the Model S.
The i Vision Dynamics is a four-door Gran Coupe which is expected to become the new i5 when it launches in 2021.
It displays new design language featured on cars such as the X7 iPerformance and Z4 Concept.
This is one of the most controversial things about the car’s design because that grille is not particularly pretty and spoils what could be an awesome car.
It’s a similar case at the rear which looks like it is melting away.

The panoramic glass roof, however, is stunning and it will be interesting to see what the interior of the BMW looks like.
One criticism of the Model S is that the interior of the Tesla, despite the technology and screens, does not warrant the hefty price tag.
As for the Tesla’s exterior some may argue that the Tesla is fairly plain and ordinary looking and enjoy the bold design of the BMW but it is also hard not to like the Model S.
Looks aside the two cars will be scrutinised on how long they can last.
Range is currency a huge issue and Tesla has remained untested at the top of the electric car podium.
Tesla Model S still trumps to BMW on speed and range
BMW claims the i Vision Dynamics will have a range of 373 miles on a single charge, which is good in today’s terms but still falls short of the top of the range Tesla Model S P100D.
This wouldn’t be so much a point of contention if the BMW was being released in 2017 but it is still three years away from entering production and by that time 373 miles on a charge may be a poultry target.
What does need to be mentioned is that the top of the range Tesla Model S P100D costs around £130,000, which is likely to be much higher than the price of the BMW when it goes on sale.
Looking at the entry level Model S the 75 kWH costs closer to £60,000 and has 292 miles of range on a single charge.

So if BMW can release the i Vision Dynamics for a price closer to the Model S 75 than the P100D then it could be a credible competitor.
Tesla also takes the crown for top speed with the Model S range being able to go between 140-155mph, compared to the 120mph top speed of the BMW.
Many people are aware that the Model S’ trump card is its incredible acceleration capabilities. YouTube is littered with the Model S drag racing supercars and leaving them in the dust.
It also looks like it could do that with the new BMW.
The German car manufacturer said that the vehicle will be able to spring from 0-62mph in under four seconds.

The Model S 75 is beaten by this with a 4.3 seconds sprint time but the P100D in Ludicrous Mode can achieve this in 2.7 seconds.
Again, price needs to be factored in here but there’s no denying the Tesla takes the top spot in the power department.
It will be interesting to see whether or not the i Vision Dynamics will become a rival to the Tesla and how closely it will follow the concept debuted in Frankfurt in terms of design, power and technology.
Similarly it will be intriguing to see what Tesla is doing at the same time and whether or not its bubble will burst when everyone catches up.
For the time being however, Elon Musk can be safe in the knowledge that they still rule the roost.–
