People were pictured desperately making their way on foot to the airport after becoming stuck
PANICKED holidaymakers ditched their cars and dragged suitcases to Manchester Airport as the M56 closed for almost three hours this evening.
People were pictured desperately making their way on foot to the airport after becoming stuck in gridlocked traffic on the motorway due to a “police incident”.
The road was closed in both directions between Cheadle and Wythenshawe as queues built up and tensions rose for travellers hoping to make a flight.
The North West Motorway Police confirmed the incident was ongoing just after 8.30pm and said there was no estimate for when it will reopen – the M56 since reopened just after 11pm.
One person tweeted just before 8.30pm: “M56 not moved in a long while. Avoid!
“People are leaving taxis with suitcases to catch flights. No sign of any change yet.”
Another said: “Just don’t even attempt to go on the M56… 2 hours in…”
Highways England said: “In Greater Manchester, the M56 is closed between J3A (Wythenshawe) and J6 (Hale Barns) in both directions due to a police incident.
“Police are on scene and working to resolve the incident. Road users are advised to allow extra journey time and to consider alternative routes.”
The motorway is now fully open.
In June motorists baked in sweltering heat during a miles-long gridlock on the M25 for over four hours on the hottest day of the year.
A crash caused traffic chaos near Heathrow Airport – prompting some desperate travellers to continue their journey on foot.
