Keep receipts for all flood-repair purchases, experts advise

For those whose property was damaged by floodwaters during Hurricane Harvey, yanking out wet drywall, boxing up belongings and trying to find available storage units is overwhelming. But keep track of everything you buy to recover from flood damage, from garbage bags to bottles of bleach to bags of ice.

That’s because you’ll need the documents later when you submit them to your insurance company, FEMA or other relief sources for reimbursement.

Put the receipts together and in a safe place, says Mark Hanna, spokesman for the Insurance Council of Texas, a trade association for the insurance industry based in Austin. No expense is too small, because they add up.
