ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Friday said the basis on which Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified has legal experts stunned and that he did not think history would remember it as a “right decision”.

Speaking at a press conference here, the JUI-F chief said opponents think they have won following the Supreme Court’s verdict disqualifying Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the Panama Papers case.

He said that now the case will be investigated under NAB, adding that even the rival party did not trust the institution.

“We thought there would be a pile of evidence but when the verdict came, the PM was disqualified over the basis of money he did not withdraw,” said Fazl.

“I don’t term it a judicial martial law; leave it on to history,” he said, adding, “The issue is not about corruption, but there has been an agenda of creating a political crisis”.

He said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and other development projects will also be undermined due to the ongoing political situation.

The Supreme Court in its verdict announced disqualification of Prime Minister Sharif for failing to disclose his un-withdrawn receivables constituting assets from UAE-based Capital FZE in his nomination papers for the 2013 elections.

Following the announcement of the verdict, Nawaz Sharif stepped down from the post of prime minister, a PML-N spokesman said.

Announcing their verdict in the Panama Papers case, all five judges ruled to send references against the premier, his children Maryam, Hussain and Hasan, son-in-law and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to an accountability court.

In the wake of the verdict, PML-N lawmakers expressed reservations over the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif and said it is likely that review petition will be filed.
