A thief cased a number of cars in broad daylight before stealing camping gear from the boot of one.

A man, wearing blue jeans and a blue and black puffer vest, was seen stopping to look into a parked car and inside a mailbox, before he found another car that was unlocked.

“He has opened the boot and taken an outdoor camping chair, a green fabric shopping bag, some sunglasses and driving glasses,” Kingston Crime Investigation Unit Senior Sergeant Shane Cashman said.

Sen-Sgt Cashman said CCTV footage shows a man, aged about 30, 180cm tall and with short black hair walking along Jeffrey St, Bentleigh shortly after 9.30am on August 20.

The thief, struggling to carry the stolen items, then went into Theresa St, had a look at another car and left the area.

Police have issued an image of a man they want to speak to in connection with the incident and Sen-Sgt Cashman called for anyone who may know the man or has information about the incident to phone police on 9556 6111 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
