[UM expects Richards to play at Duke]
If some national bowl projections come true, the Hurricanes will be home for the holidays.
Five new picks, including a few from well known outlets, place Miami (2-0) in the Orange Bowl by the end of the season.
Bowl projections are mostly meaningless this early in the season, but that’s fun to think about.
UM hasn’t played in the Orange Bowl since 2004. That season, ninth-ranked Miami beat eighth-ranked Florida State in a 16-14 thriller.
The 2017 edition is 8 p.m. Dec. 30 at Hard Rock Stadium.
Those projecting the Hurricanes, ranked 14th entering Friday’s game at Duke (7 p.m., ESPN), to make the Orange Bowl believe UM is on track for a stellar season.
In the College Football Playoff system, the Orange Bowl is one of the six bowls that rotate as hosts for semifinal games. When the Orange Bowl is not hosting one — as is the case this year — it draws the ACC champion or best available ACC team if the ACC champion is in the playoff. The ACC team plays a team from the SEC, Big Ten or independent Notre Dame.
In the Bowl Championship Series era and decades before, UM made nine Orange Bowl appearances, winning the national title in 1984, 1988 and 1992. The Hurricanes played in the game’s predecessor, the Festival of Palms Bowl, in 1932-33.
