This happened shortly after police believe he killed a restaurant worker
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was ran over and killed on Interstate 5 while shooting at travelers after police believe he murdered a restaurant worker and stole their car.
In a release, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said they received a call at 6:54 a.m. from the driver who struck and killed the suspect. The driver said the suspect was shooting at cars, including the driver’s, at milepost 1 on I-5 south. Police found the dead shooter near a car parked in the middle of the interstate with a gun also nearby.
Shortly after, police received a call from Callahan’s Lodge, close to where the crash happened, saying they found a dead worker in the kitchen. The worker’s car was also stolen, which they later identified as the car the shooter used and parked in the middle of the interstate. Police believe the two crimes are connected.
The Sheriff’s Office hasn’t released the names of the victim and suspect, saying they are working to notify the families.
ODOT announced shortly after 4 p.m. that all southbound lanes that were detoured and closed during the investigation are reopened.
