A road has been closed for some time after a series of accidents and what police have described as a ‘significant’ fuel spillage.
Middle Street in Harpswell has been closed in both directions after the incident, which occurred just before 9am today, Monday, September 18.
Four cars have come off the road, one of which appears to have flipped over and into a field.
Three other cars span out of control, according to the BBC.
The Inrix traffic website says sources say that there has been an accident in which a car left the road near the larger community of Hemswell Cliff near Caenby Corner.
The spillage occurred between the A631 Harpswell Hill and Coachroad Hill and Dog Kennel Road.
A spokesman for the county council said: “One of the gritters has been out to help with the clean up, and a highways officer will be heading over asap to inspect the road.
“We’ll get it open as soon as it’s safe to do so.”

Mark Tatum, a resident in Harpswell, said the location of the spillage is not a populated area.
“There’s absolutely nothing there,” he said.
“It’s just farmers’ fields on both sides. There isn’t a building anywhere.
