School holidays: 11 places to go on a rainy day in Somerset

One of the guarantees of the school summer holidays, apart from those two words “I’m bored”, is the fact that at some point it will pour with rain.

This could be a great time to get crafting at home or to crack open the popcorn and have a cinema day with some DVD’s.

For most kids though, the rain is not an obstacle and they still want to know where they are going that day.

Seaquarium – Weston-super-Mare

There’s nothing like an indoor adventure that takes you to the depths of the ocean. Seaquariun at Weston-super-Mare has over 30 exhibits, ranging from freshwater to tropical via marine. There are ten different zones, with Puffer Fish swimming about the Tropical Reef Zone and Piranhas in the Rainforest River Zone. There’s even an ocean tunnel through the shark tank, so a fantastic experience.

Fleet Air Arm Museum

The museum that is dedicated to the flying arm of the Royal Navy is about to unveil a couple major changes to what it can offer. An £80,000 outdoor playground will transform the entrance, while a new exhibition charting 40 years of changing world tensions from the Cold War to Kabul focusing on four iconic aircraft – two Harriers, a Sea King and a Lynx – will be a fantastic addition.

There will still be all the usuals from modern jet aircraft to helicopters as well as a Kamikaze exhibit.

Brean Play

Located at Brean Leisure Park, Brean Play is a huge indoor play centre for kids from toddlers to 11 year olds and there are three areas for them to explore.

There will be enough stimulating and interactive play equipment to hopefully ensure children will go home tired and happy.

Safari Tots

If Brean is the wrong side of Somerset for you then Safari Tots at Somerton might be a fantastic alternative. There’s a two lane ‘whizz slide’, dangling snakes and something called ‘bish bash’, which sounds like it will be suitably energy sapping.

Junction 21 Kids Play Centre

In Frome there is a play centre that has bouncy castles that have enough oomph to them, that they can throw the older kids up in the air. Don’t worry there are smaller castles for the younger once to bounce the day away.

Rope swings and ball pools with guns, will ensure that kids are kept amused for hours.

AMF Hollywood Bowl Taunton

There’s nothing like a little healthy family competition to get the banter flowing and bring everyone together with an afternoon of fun. No matter the weather outside, a game of ten pin bowling will always raise a smile.

With the gutter bumpers and ball roller ramps, children of any age can take on the adults and have the opportunity to hit strikes and spares.

There’s a juke box, café, free parking and, most importantly in the kids minds, free WiFi. Don’t forget to check out the Hollywood Bowl’s offers.

O’Bridge Brewers Fayre, Taunton

Not only is there a cracking meal deal for kids at Brewers Fayre, O’Bridge at Taunton has a huge Play Zone that will keep kids occupied for hours. The Fun Factory is supervised at all times and there are slides, climbs, balls and bouncers available, so plenty of opportunity to wear out the little monkeys before bedtime.

Somerset Cricket Museum

If you would like a more refined afternoon and the chance to engage their sporty side, then a trip to Somerset Cricket Museum can steep you in the history of the county cricket club and learn about the exploits of Sir Ian Botham and Marcus Trescothick.

There is cricketing memorabilia from across the decades ass well as an exhibition commemorating the centenary of the outbreak out WWI, in which 13 Somerset players lost their lives.

The museum is acclaimed as one of the best of its kind in the country and is a must for cricket lovers.


If the kids are climbing the walls, wanting something interesting to do, then a trip to Ready2climb will give them the opportunity to actually climb some walls.

There are 14 climbing walls to tackle from the novice to the expert and plenty of climbs for families that would like to just have some fun. There is also a bouncy truck and a caving experience for those that want a change from going up and fancy a chance to go into the unknown.

Wells Leisure Centre

When it is wet outside, let yourself go wild by getting wet indoors instead. Wells Leisure Centre has a 25m swimming pool as well as family interactive pool with lots of fun water play features.

There is plenty of time to have fun as well as building those all-important swimming skills. There are opportunities to book lessons and there’s also a sports centre, in case you want to work off some of those summer excesses.
