School holidays off to soaring start as temperatures climb

SOUTHEAST Queensland will be tinderbox dry as temperatures climb through the first week of the school holidays.

The mercury is expected to hit a top of 34C in Brisbane and 38C in Ipswich on Sunday while Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast are all set for a clear sunny day today with tops of 28C to 29C.

Temperatures will hover between 3C and 6C above the average September maximum for the week.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Sam Campbell said there could be thunderstorms west of Ipswich, but the rest of the region would remain dry.

Fog is also possible in Brisbane city.

Jessie Nepean-Hutchinson, 7, from Ashmore will be taking advantage of the stellar school holiday conditions, with a trip to the beach in the works.
