Tech experts give verdict on ‘sensational’ new iPhone

Two veteran tech experts have offered their learned opinion on the newly-unveiled iPhone models.

Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the state at the company’s new Apple Park campus in the US to reveal the new iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

Tech Guide editor and radio host Stephen Fenech and tech podcast and radio host Trevor Long were both in the audience.

“There’s no doubt the screen is amazing – top to bottom, the whole front of the phone is a screen, it looks sensational,” Mr Long said of the iPhone X.

The phone offers a 5.8-inch edge-to-edge display, and no Home button.

Users will also unlock their phone through facial recognition.

“So what it uses is quite advanced camera technology to not just see your face but see all around your face so that it can determine you are a real person, you’re not a mask and that you are who you say you are,” Mr Long said.

Mr Fenech predicted the iPhone’s new wireless charging, which involves placing the phone on a charging pad rather than plugging it in to a cable, would change the landscape of a lot of businesses.

“You’re going to see that a lot of places like cafes and airports and even cars are going to include this new wireless charging technology,” he said.

Mr Fenech was also impressed with the iPhone 8.

“The iPhone 8 is like a slight improvement over the 7 in terms of design,” he said.

“A lot of new features like a much faster processor.”

The iPhone 8 will cost $1079 to $1329, compared to $1229 to $1479 for the iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone X will be available from November 3, with prices ranging from $1579 to $1829.

Prices are $300 higher for Australian customers.

“I think this is a very exciting future and an exciting phone,” Mr Long said of the X model.

“Apple see this iPhone X as the future of smartphones and there’s no doubt they’ve got a good response from it.”
