A teenage driver was detained by police after a three mile chase along suburban streets at speeds of more than 60mph.

Officers took the 18-year-old to hospital with an arm injury after he was stopped on Grosvenor Road in Handsworth Wood in a Mazda car.

He was first spotted driving erratically along Dyas Road in Great Barr shortly before 10.30pm on Friday.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said the driver, who holds only a provisional driving licence, failed to stop and instead raced away clocking speeds of over 60mph in a 30mph zone.

The police pursuit snaked along Old Walsall Street and Hampstead Road where the fleeing driver clipped several cars including a Toyota and Nissan Micra.

He eventually came to a stop in Grosvenor Road where he tried to jump into the front seat while two other occupants fled the car on foot towards Calthorpe Road.

The police spokesman said: “A police helicopter and K9 unit attended but the two occupants could not be found.

“Officers detained an 18-year-old man at the scene and took him to hospital before dropping him off at his parent’s home.

“He has arranged to voluntarily attend an interview with investigating officers next week.

“No-one apart from the driver suffered any injuries.”
