There are all sorts of cucumber varieties available at the Coachella Valley Summer Certified Farmers’ Markets. Choose from Kirby, Persian, English or Burpless cucumbers. They’re all delicious and ready to eat — by themselves, in salads, or pickled in a variety of ways.
Cucumbers are actually part of the gourd family — the same family that includes squash, pumpkins, watermelons, and, of course, gourds. Like summer squash varieties, cucumbers are picked while young, green and tender, before the fruit fully matures. Although believed to have originated in India, they have been consumed by humans since early times and cultivated for at least 3,000 years. As a result cucumbers figure into many different diets and ethnic dishes.
Did you know: Cucumbers were listed among the foods of ancient Ur (the Sumerian city state in ancient Mesopotamia), and included in the legend of Gilgamesh, which describes people eating cucumbers.
Price: $2 to $3 each, depending on the variety.
