The new Volvo XC40 launched yesterday at an event in Milan.
It joined the popular XC60 and XC90 models in the Swedish car manufacturer’s popular SUV range.
Of the three, it is the smallest and cheapest with prices starting at £27,295 in the UK.
The car’s design is familiar, clearly inspired by its larger siblings but has more dynamic and muscular proportions.
Little touches such as the inverted Thor hammer headlight signature, colour contrasting roof and side mirrors and optional gloss black detailing give it its own identity.
It’s more than just a good-looking car though with a modern and connected interior which includes a 12-inch driver display and 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system which controls the navigation.
Inside it’s uncluttered and simplistic but made with luxury materials which can be specified in bold new colours and textures.
XC40 is also the first car to be built on the new Compact Modular Architecture which will also be used on future smaller Volvo car.
One game changing feature of the car is the new service which was launched alongside it at the event in Milan.
Care by Volvo is a new service which aims to simplify and improve the process of owning and running a car for the Swedish manufacturer’s customers.
The service streamlines the process of leasing and owning a car into one monthly payment.
It takes a flat fee to cover the cost of the car, insurance and maintenance into one instalment paid monthly. the only thing it doesn’t cover is the cost of fuel.
The price for it is non-negotiable which means you won’t get ripped off for the ca but also means you won’t be able to haggle the price.
Think of the service as like a phone contract. Every 24 months you will get a new car, much like a phone.
Håkan Samuelsson, President and Chief Executive of Volvo Cars, said: “With Care by Volvo, we introduce a new car access for the modern age.
“In a time where consumers are used to transparent flat fees for all sorts of services, the traditional process of buying and owning a car can be perceived as rather complicated. Care by Volvo changes all of that.”
Another feature of the service is the possibility for drivers to switch their car for a temporary basis.
For example if you were going on a camping trip and wanted a larger SUV or estate car with roof rack then you could swap your car temporarily to suit your needs.
“Our aim with Care by Volvo is to provide our customers with a transparent, premium car user experience.
“With a fixed monthly payment, Volvo Cars provides a truly customer-focused alternative to the traditional purchase or leasing.
“Time is a luxury for our customers, and with this service we are able to free up time in their daily lives. This is simply making life easier for our customers,” said Thomas Andersson, Vice President Care by Volvo at Volvo Cars.
No prices for the service have been announced yet but will likely be revealed a few weeks ahead of the launch next year.
