THE SUMMER break is coming to an end for most British children – probably sparking mixed feelings for attentive, but worn out parents.

But when are the kids officially going back and what are the term dates for the 2017/18 academic year?

When do schools re-open after the summer holidays?

School holiday dates in the UK can vary between the different local education authorities.

However, most children in England and Wales broke up for the summer holidays on Friday 21 July.

They enjoy six weeks off school before returning in early September.

In Scotland, the holidays started at the end of June, and kids will go back to school in the middle of August.

What are the school holiday and half term dates for the 2017/2018 academic year?

Again, school holiday and term time dates can vary depending on which part of the country you live in.

The dates below are just a rough guide, but check your local council website for the exact dates.

The summer holidays kicked off for most kids from July 21, with children back in school in early September.

Other school holiday and term time dates for English schools during the 2017/2018 academic year include:

  • School starts: Friday 1 September – Tuesday 5 September
  • Half term break starts: Monday 16 October – Thursday 19 October
  • Christmas holidays start: Monday 18 December – Thursday 21 December
  • Half term break starts: Monday 12 February
  • Easter holidays start: Friday 30 March
  • Half term break starts: Monday 28 May
  • Summer holiday starts: Thursday 26 July

Why are holidays so expensive during the school holidays?

As hotels, airlines and tour operators know that more people will want to jet off during school holidays, many hike up their prices.

Recent research has revealed that some holidays are nine time more expensive when schools are off when compared to term time.

Now there are growing calls for the government to intervene and force tour operators to lower their proces during the holidays so less children are taken out of school during term time.

Is it legal to take your children on holiday during term time?

Parents are only allowed to let their children miss school if they are sick.

Previously heads could grant 10 days of authorised absence but they are now unable to grant any at all.

It has been revealed that almost 20,000 people were taken to court in 2015 after their children missed school without permission – an increase of more than a fifth.

Those who take their kids out of school will be slapped with a £60 fine which rises to £120 if not is paid after 21 days.
