Malaysian commuters will soon enjoy a more seamless travel experience as Prasarana Malaysia Bhd prepares to roll out an open payment system across its transport network
Once implemented, passengers will no longer be limited to Touch ‘n Go cards or physical tokens. Instead, they will be able to tap in using credit and debit cards, QR codes, and mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay, as reported by Malay Mail.
The existing automated fare collection (AFC) system, which has relied on Touch ‘n Go since 1999, is a “closed-loop” system that does not natively support newer contactless bank card technologies
While commuters can currently use credit or debit cards at ticket machines, these are restricted to reloading Touch ‘n Go cards or purchasing single-journey tokens, rather than direct “tap-and-go” access at fare gates.
For Rapid KL bus services, the limitations are even stricter, as cash payments were phased out in 2019. Currently, bus passengers must use a physical card, with QR-based payments only available for specific app-based services such as Rapid KL On-Demand (ROD).
Prasarana has confirmed that the open payment project is currently in the final stages of the award process
Once finalised, the rollout will proceed in phases, with rail services such as LRT, MRT, and the Monorail expected to be fully operational within 30 months. About 30% of fare gates are expected to support open payments within the first 12 months.
For bus services, including RapidKL, MRT feeder buses, RapidPenang, and BRT, full coverage across the Klang Valley is expected within 15 months.
The initiative will also support integration across all major rail and bus lines, including the upcoming LRT Shah Alam Line, which is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2026.
