From Algorithms to Assets: Intellectual Property Strategies for AI SMEs
Artificial intelligence is creating new opportunities for innovation and growth, but AI startups and SMEs also face complex intellectual property challenges involving software, data, patents, copyright, trade secrets, licensing, and commercialization.
To help address these issues, World Intellectual Property Organization and International Telecommunication Union are launching a special edition of the Intellectual Property Management Clinic (IPMC) for AI-driven startups and SMEs. The program offers expert mentoring, workshops, and tailored guidance to help companies identify, protect, manage, and leverage their IP and other intangible assets for growth, investment, partnerships, and international expansion.

Why Apply?
Selected companies will receive:
- One-on-one mentoring from IP and commercialization experts;
- Support to identify and manage key IP assets (e.g., software, data, algorithms, brands, and inventions);
- Guidance on IP strategy, patents, copyright, trademarks, trade secrets, licensing, and AI-related legal challenges;
- Improved readiness for investment, partnerships, technology transfer, and commercialization;
- Access to WIPO resources and a global network of AI innovators and experts.
Program Structure (July–November 2026)
- Launch Event (10 July 2026, Geneva & online)
The Clinic will be officially launched as an hybrid event during the AI for Good Global Summit in Geneva, Switzerland, on 10 July 2026.
The launch session will feature a high-level discussion on:
“From AI Innovation to Investable Assets: The Role of Intellectual Property”
- One-on-One Mentoring
Each participating company will be matched with a dedicated expert and will receive individualized mentoring sessions focused on IP assessment, strategy development, AI-specific guidance, and a tailored IP roadmap.
- Online Workshops
Topics include:
- Strategic IP management for AI;
- Patents, copyright, and trade secrets;
- Licensing and open-source issues;
- Contracts, ownership, and collaboration;
- IP valuation, commercialization, and international growth.
Who Should Apply?
AI-driven startups and SMEs working in areas such as:
- Generative AI and foundation models;
- AI software and SaaS;
- Health and life sciences;
- Industrial AI and smart manufacturing;
- Telecommunications and digital infrastructure;
- Creative technologies, data analytics, robotics, and computer vision.
Selection Criteria
Applications will be assessed based on:
- Innovation and relevance of the AI solution;
- Growth and commercialization potential;
- Expected value of IP support;
- Commitment to the program.
