Billed as the race of the week, the St James’s Palace Stakes didn’t disappoint as Field Of Gold took his form to a new level with an impressive success that elevated him to the elite bracket with a Racing Post Rating of 131+.

It was the best RPR recorded in the race, 2lb higher than the previous high posted by his sire Kingman 11 years ago, and was a performance that set a very high bar for the rest of the year.

Comparisons with Kingman were inevitable, but there was more depth to last week’s race than the 2014 running won by his father, in which five of the seven-strong field returned career-best RPRs.
