Arsenal have reportedly contacted Paris Saint-Germain regarding the potential transfer of Xavi Simons who is expected to leave the club this summer after ending his loan spell in the German Bundesliga with RB Leipzig.

According to French outlet L’Équipe, PSG are hesitant to sell the midfielder this summer due to contractual obligations with PSV Eindhoven. Reports suggest that any sale before January 2025 would involve a significant portion of the fee going to PSV, making a loan move the likeliest option.

Simons, 21, holds the final decision on his next club, thanks to a clause in his PSG contract. There is speculation that another loan move to RB Leipzig could be on the cards, with Simons expressing a preference for stability in the Bundesliga after frequent moves over the past three years. A final decision is expected after his participation in the Euros.

L’Équipe reports uncertainty over Simons’ future at PSG, with the Dutchman reportedly unwilling to return to Paris following his loan spell at RB Leipzig, which officially ends on July 1st. Despite appreciation from manager Luis Enrique, Simons seeks a leadership role and significant playing time, which he believes PSG cannot currently guarantee.

Interest in Simons extends beyond Arsenal, with Manchester City, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich all reportedly contacting PSG, although Barcelona have not yet made a move for their former academy player. PSG’s agreement with PSV complicates any potential sale, as the Dutch club would recoup a large portion of any transfer fee until January 2025, prompting PSG to consider loan options in the short term.

RB Leipzig remains keen on reuniting with Simons for another season, aiming to negotiate a purchase option this time around. Simons, eager for stability, views a return to the Bundesliga favourably.

Arsenal, in their pursuit of midfield reinforcements, view Simons as fitting the profile desired by manager Mikel Arteta for their talented squad.
