It looks like Bryan Gil is going to get his move to Girona after all. According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur and Girona have agreed to… well, let’s just call it a somewhat unusual agreement that would extend Gil’s Spurs contract, insert an €15m release clause, and send him to Spain for the season on loan.

Exclusive details: Bryan Gil will extend his contract at #THFC with €15m release clause.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a deal quite like this, to be honest, at least one connected to Tottenham. Rather than just outright selling Gil to Girona for a cheaper price, we end up with a loan, an extended Spurs contract, and an opportunity for Girona (or anyone else, really) to buy Bryan at €15m next summer or down the road. It doesn’t really mention the length of Gil’s new Spurs contract or how far down the road Spurs have just kicked his can.
I guess this is smart financial sense from Tottenham? I have no idea. It does imply that Girona weren’t able to put together a purchase package that was enough to convince Spurs to sell outright, and the club might not have wanted to just let him go on loan this season and enter the last year of his initial Spurs contract where they have less leverage with which to sell him. So in a sense, this adds some clarity — Gil’s future purchase price is €15m, and clubs can either take it or leave it (or come back and try to negotiate with Tottenham again in the future and here we go in circles all over again).
Whatever. Gil’s going to Girona, and good for him I guess?
