With the average price of a new car at an all-time high of $49,740, used cars are gaining wide popularity. Despite supply challenges, U.S. dealers sold approximately 1.41 million used vehicles in 2024, a 13% increase from the previous year.

Consumer Reports just released their ten “best” used vehicles. To earn a recommendation, used cars must have excelled in CR’s road tests when new, shown above-average reliability for multiple years in member surveys, and have standard electronic stability control (ESC). Each selection represents the newest model year within a targeted price range.

Under $10,000 2016 Mazda 6

This year’s model features a smooth four-cylinder engine, agile handling and strong fuel efficiency at 32 mpg overall. The cabin has supportive seats, though rear space is tight. A 2016 update reduced cabin noise. Available active safety features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. It’s a sporty, handsome guy.

Under $15,000: 2018 Toyota Corolla

The Corolla is an all-around great sedan with a roomy back seat and smooth ride. Its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and CVT deliver 32 mpg overall. The SE and XSE trims offer sportier handling. The 2017 refresh made Toyota Safety Sense-P standard, adding forward collision warning, automatic braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. The strong reliability and efficiency make this a great used choice.

SUV Under $15,000: 2016 Honda CR-V

The fourth-generation CR-V improved in space, power, and safety, and the CR-V still remains a reliable, well-reviewed, safe vehicle. A 2015 update introduced a 185-hp 2.4-liter engine with a CVT, increasing fuel economy to 24 mpg overall. Higher trims include forward collision warning, automatic braking, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.

Hybrid Under $20,000: 2019 Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Camry Hybrid LE delivers a Prius-beating 52 mpg overall with a 610-mile range. It has all the charm of its gas-powered trim with a smooth ride, nimble handling and strong safety features including forward collision warning, automatic braking, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control. Apple CarPlay was added in 2019.

Small SUV Under $20,000: 2021 Kia Sportage

The Sportage is a no-nonsense, all around charmer with a refined powertrain, sporty handling and a reasonably spacious interior. A 2020 update improved the infotainment system and added automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assist. Try the LX trim, with its available powered front seats.

Hybrid SUV Under $20,000: 2018 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

A 2016 update improved the already-great RAV4’s styling, ride, and safety features while introducing the hybrid. It has stronger low-speed acceleration than the gas model and returns 8 more mpg in CR tests. Reliability improved notably in 2017 and 2018, making these years the best picks. If you’re a musician, in the trades or otherwise need to run around with a fairly full vehicle, this is a favorite.

3-Row SUV Under $20,000: 2020 Mazda CX-9

The CX-9 is a big guy whose handling is sturdy and engine responsive. It’s a big vehicle that doesn’t feel like Godzilla, in a good way. A 2020 update added second-row captain’s chairs and pedestrian detection. The 2021 infotainment update was less user-friendly, making the 2020 model the better choice.

Luxury SUV Under $20,000: 2017 Lexus NX

Derived from the Toyota RAV4, the NX features a 235-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and six-speed automatic transmission, returning 24 mpg overall. The 2018 model added forward collision warning and automatic braking. For Android Auto, opt for the 2020 model. But sometimes you don’t need it if it’s not there – “Bluetooth” works, too.

Pickup Truck Under $20,000: 2015 Toyota Tacoma

The second-generation Tacoma is a rugged, reliable truck that deserves every bit of its success. It offers a plethora of configurations including a strong V6 and off-road-ready TRD trims. A 2012 update improved features, and the composite bed resists rust. The third generation, starting in 2016, is pricier. But if you get one that’s in decent shape and hasn’t been pounded excessively, you’ll go right with most Tacomas.

Sports Car Under $20,000: 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The good old reliable Miata delivers fun handling, reliability and efficiency. A 2019 update increased the 2.0-liter engine’s power from 155 to 181 hp. The simple manual top is easy to operate, and a retractable hardtop (RF) is available. For Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, consider a 2020 or retrofitted older model. The good thing about Miatas is most people don’t make them go through heavy snow or bad roads.
