Cosmos Ecosystem Welcomes Native EVM Framework Through Evmos Open-Sourcing

The Interchain Foundation, part of the Cosmos ecosystem, has announced the open-sourcing of Evmos, establishing it as the network’s native Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) framework.

This move integrates EVM into the official Interchain software stack, which includes the widely used Cosmos SDK, thereby standardizing EVM functionality across Cosmos blockchains.

Evmos, initially launched in 2022 after being conceptualized in 2016 as Ethermint, was designed to facilitate EVM compatibility within the Cosmos ecosystem. The recent transition means that over 200 appchains within the multichain environment can now leverage a standardized version of the EVM.

This integration supports JSON-RPC and allows Ethereum wallet compatibility through a lightweight configuration, specifically for ERC-20 tokens.

The announcement also comes amid a significant decline in the value of the Evmos token, which has dropped by more than 30% in the past 24 hours. Various financial sources have noted the price movement, highlighting the volatility often associated with cryptocurrency projects.

As part of this transition, Evmos co-founder Federico Kunze Küllmer will step back from his role as a core contributor but will continue to advise the Interchain Foundation on matters related to Cosmos EVM’s interoperability and modular architecture. His firm, Altiplanic, which has been a key contributor to the Evmos codebase, will cease its involvement in the project.

The open-sourcing of Evmos is expected to enhance cross-chain interoperability through the Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol, further bridging the gap between Cosmos and the broader EVM ecosystem.
