Maruti Suzuki will be the next big entrant in the EV segment of India’s passenger vehicle market with the launch of e Vitara, likely by end of April.
The electric vehicle (EV) market still has a long way to go but demand has seen growth in the last couple of years with the introduction of various new models from almost every OEM. Tata Motors leads the battery-powered segment in the passenger vehicle market but the homegrown carmaker has started facing some stiff competition from JSW MG Motor.
According to FADA’s retail sales data, a total of 12,356 electric cars were sold at dealerships across the country in March 2025 as compared to 9,792 units sold during the same month last year. This resulted in a 26 per cent YoY growth.

Tata Motors on top but MG pushing hard
Tata Motors sold 4,710 units of EVs in March 2025, a drop from 7,184 from March last year. As a result, the company’s indisputable market share dropped from 73 per cent to 38 per cent. Two of Tata’s highest-selling models — Nexon and Punch — both are offered in EV guises along with Tiago EV, Tigor EV, and Curvv EV. However, Tata is yet to share the exact breakdown of its EV sales.
On the other hand, JSW MG Motor made a huge jump from 12 per cent to 31 per cent market share. This is primarily on the back of the success of MG’s latest EV offering — Windsor. Since its launch in October 2024, the company has dispatched 20,000 units of Windsor to dealerships till date. Competitive pricing, flexible ownership plans, tons of features, smooth driving experience, and a unique design are some of its strongest attributes that have helped Windsor rack up these numbers.

Big surge expected from Mahindra
Mahindra took the third spot with 1,944 electric cars sold to customers last month. During March last year, the Chakan-based automaker sold only 692 units of EVs. The recent surge has been courtesy of two new Electric Origin models — BE 6 and XEV 9e. Earlier, the EV sales of Mahindra were contributed solely by the XUV 400.
Mahindra’s Born Electric SUVs have garnered positive reviews and have helped the company raise its share from 7 per cent to 15 per cent. The fourth spot was taken by Hyundai which sold 849 units of EVs in March this year, a significant jump of 153 units from March last year. This is likely due to the introduction of Creta EV earlier this year.
