Motability Scheme price update as more drivers may consider electric vehicles

The Motability Scheme allows those claiming qualifying disability benefits to allocate some of their award towards leasing a new car, scooter or wheelchair-friendly vehicle

The Motability Scheme has revamped its price list, placing a greater emphasis on electric vehicles (EVs). The scheme, managed by Motability Operations, enables individuals receiving certain disability benefits to use part of their award to lease a new car, wheelchair-accessible vehicle, or scooter.

Currently, it’s open to those receiving Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP), and War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS).

In the latest update to its price list, the scheme underscored that car manufacturers are increasingly focusing on EVs. This means customers now have a wider range of electric cars to choose from, many of which don’t require an upfront payment.

Additionally, customers opting for an EV will receive extra support with charging their vehicle.

This could make the switch to EVs more appealing for some customers. The scheme also pointed out that the cost of repairing and maintaining petrol and diesel cars has risen, potentially leading to higher Advance Payments for these vehicles.

What is an Advance Payment?

It’s an optional upfront payment made when leasing a vehicle through the Motability Scheme, in addition to the weekly mobility allowance.

This Advance Payment is designed to bridge the gap between the cost of a car and the allowance provided over the vehicle’s lease period. It’s crucial to understand that this isn’t a deposit, but a non-refundable payment.

Should a customer opt for a vehicle requiring an Advance Payment, they must pay it in full to their dealer before they can take possession of the new vehicle.

The Motability Scheme website has highlighted its top picks of vehicles available both with and without an Advance Payment. This selection encompasses a range of vehicles, including electric vehicles (EVs), petrol, and diesel models.
