The government said cutting red tape will be a boost for the industry

Owners of the electric vehicle are no longer required to apply for a planning permission to install a private charging point on their driveway, it can be revealed.

The change in law came into force at the end of last month with a view to cut down on red tape and boost EV take up in the country.

As reported by The Express electric car owners are now able to install plugs quicker and cheaper than ever before. The move also applies to businesses, with firms no longer required to fill out detailed forms to install a public charger on their land.

Speaking to the national newspaper, David Martell, CEO at Andersen EV said the decision was a “significant step forward in accelerating the UK’s transition to electric vehicles”.

He added: “This change not only simplifies the installation process but also empowers homeowners to opt for a solution that aligns with their lifestyle and aesthetic requirements.”

A total of 1,344 were installed over the past month alone while there is a target of 300,000 EV plugs to be installed in the UK by the end of the decade.

Lilian Greenwood, the Government’s Future of Roads Minister, said the new rules will be a greatl boost for the EV sector. She said: “We’re cutting down on paperwork to power up the EV revolution so that drivers, businesses and those looking to make the switch will have more chargepoints to power from and less red tape to deal with.

“We continue to make the switch to EVs easier, cheaper and better by investing over £2.3 billion to support drivers and back British carmakers through international trade deals – creating jobs, boosting investment and securing our future as part of our Plan for Change.”
