Snow, sleet and rain are affecting parts of Northern Ireland today following a yellow weather warning.

The weather warning was in place from 4am until 10am and impacted counties Armagh, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone.

Police received several reports of vehicles becoming stuck in heavy overnight snow in the Enniskillen area.

There were also reports of fallen trees due to snow on Irvinestown’s Mill Street, Lisbellaw’s Main Street and Enniskillen’s Derrylin Road, while Boa Island Road in Belleek, Lisnakea Road and Derrygonnelly Road were blocked by snow.

A Translink spokesperson said in a post on X that “all services operated by Enniskillen are currently suspended… due to extreme weather conditions”.

Road users are being advised to travel with extra caution and to consider whether their journeys are necessary.

Salting of roads on the scheduled network considered to be at risk of ice and snow was carried out on Thursday evening and Friday morning, and Department for Infrastructure engineers will continue to monitor the weather and roads due to a degree of uncertainty in the forecast.

The Met Office said an area of rain, sleet and snow which has extended northwards across the south and west of Northern Ireland is expected to be slow moving for a time on Friday morning, before gradually moving back southwards before midday.

Some slushy accumulations of 1cm to 2cm are possible this morning, while a few higher spots could see up to 8cm of snow before conditions are expected to change this afternoon.

A cloudy start is forecast for the day, turning drier and brighter through the morning with a maximum temperature of 6C.

It is expected to be mainly dry this evening with a few showers across the west. These showers will become more frequent during the early hours with snow on the hills and a minimum temperature of 1C.

Looking to the weekend, a cold and cloudy day with scattered showers is forecast for Saturday, and there is a chance of a few showers on Sunday.
