Transport for London (TfL) will stage ‘an emergency scenario’ of a car on fire in Rotherhithe Tunnel, with fake smoke and paid actors.

The controlled process is done to test the team’s safety response if it were to happen in real life.

Between 10 pm on Tuesday 25 – 5 am on Wednesday 26 March, the tunnel will be closed whilst the simulation is carried out.

TfL sent out a letter to warn residents and apologise for any inconvenience caused, adding that they aimed to make it ‘as realistic as possible.’

The letter reads: “The exercise will test the tunnel safety systems, our process and procedures and communications with the emergency services.”

Emergency services will be in attendance, as well as ‘scrapped vehicles’ and ‘actors to replicate casualties.’

Non-hazardous smoke and alarms will be used, but people are advised this will only be ‘for a short time’ to be considerate to neighbours.
