A list of best-selling cars, trucks and SUVs of last year has been published by Jato Dynamics, and it features a big surprise at the top. The long-standing best-selling Ford F-150 has finally been taken down a peg by a long-time runner-up, possibly reflecting the ongoing shifts in trends and overall upheaval of traditions in the auto industry today. Let’s take a look at what America spent its money on in one of the biggest popularity contests in the world with the best-selling models of 2024.
There’s one small technicality with the F-150’s fall from sales grace in the number one spot, and that’s that Ford typically self-reports F-Series (adding together F-150, F-250, F-350, etc.) sales in one big lump, so we’re relying on Jato Dynamics data to break down individual F-150 sales to keep the fight fair. With that out of the way, here’s the top selling vehicles in the U.S. for 2024, starting at the bottom of the list:
10. GMC Sierra
The GMC Sierra 1500 pickup beat a couple of its competitors at no. 10 on this year’s list, gaining 11 percent in sales up to 216,248 total trucks sold in 2024. It was only bested in its category by its sibling Silverado and rival Ford F-150 last year, showing promise for the true flagship of the GMC brand.
9. Honda Civic
Honda shows up twice in the top 10 for 2024 best-sellers, with the newly updated Civic taking the no. 9 spot with 21 percent sales growth to 242,005 sales.
8. Nissan Rogue
Nissan’s lonely contribution to the best-sellers for 2024 is the handsome Rogue SUV, slipping 7 percent for the struggling automaker and totaling 245,724 sales on the year. A total redesign of the Murano SUV for 2025 could help things improve this upcoming year, but we’ll see as the brand goes into merger talks with Honda and others to stay afloat.
6., 7. Toyota Camry and Corolla
The Corolla was hot though, with 22 percent growth to 283,098 sales total (for the 7th spot), and the Camry sedan grew 7 percent with 309,875 total units moved (to the 6th spot).
5. Chevrolet Silverado
Chevy alone, separate from all other GM brands, hits the list three times for 2024, claiming the no. 17 spot with the Equinox, which saw sales slump 11 percent (but there’s an all-new model out for 2025) with 189,145 total sales. The all-new Chevy Trax front-wheel drive SUV claimed the no. 12 spot with 200,689 sales total, proving that affordable, efficient, useful models have a place in the market. Finally, Chevy’s Silverado takes the no. 5 spot with 344,022 sales, the biggest direct pickup competitor to the Ford F-150 (but still more than 110,000 sales behind).
4. Tesla Model Y
Despite an all-new so-called “Highland” updated version of the Tesla Model 3 electric sedan, the automaker’s most affordable model, it saw sales slip 10 percent to 189,903 total sales for 2024, claiming the 16th spot on the list. The Tesla Model Y SUV sold better and made it to the no. 4 spot on the list with 372,613 total sales for last year, a drop of 3 percent. However, the Model Y itself has a so-called “Juniper” update coming for 2025, so sales may rebound from that.
3. Honda CR-V
The Honda CR-V SUV managed to sell much better than the Civic and hit the no. 3 spot on the list with an 11 percent growth to 402,791 total sales last year.
2. Ford F-150
Ford claimed two spots in the top-20 best-sellers, with the F-150 pickup already mentioned at no. 2 with sales of 460,915 (and a 5 percent slump, and the end of its 42-year run atop the best-selling vehicles in America list), and the dependable Ford Explorer SUV at no. 14 with a 4 percent year-over-year sales gain at 194,094 total sales.
1. Toyota RAV4
Finally, we come back to Toyota. The popular and recently-redesigned Tacoma pickup is less popular last year, with a slip of 18 percent of its sales to 192,813 total. Then there’s the Toyota RAV4 SUV, which is so popular it finally beat the F-150 as the best-selling new vehicle in a single year, after multiple years of chasing. The RAV4 managed to move 475,193 models with a 9 percent growth in sales, besting every other vehicle on the market. With a redesigned model coming in 2025, will this domination continue? Ford doesn’t seem to have much planned for the F-150, so stay tuned.
