The new Mercedes-AMG GT is a stunning thing, both to look at and on paper. Visually it’s a proper hunched-down, long-bonnet, flared out supercar, and it has the power to match. A 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 sends 585 horsepower to all four wheels, giving this second-generation GT a 3.2-second 0-62mph time. And a 196mph top speed.
The sound it makes, too… oof. With even the most exotic cars going hybrid now – the forthcoming Bentley Continental GT, for example – the AMG GT feels like a throwback to a simpler time. A car designed for noise and drama.

But this could be the last AMG GT that we’ll ever get like this, before it either goes hybrid or fully electric. Or disappears altogether. There’ll be no place for a car with a drivetrain like this in the not-too-distant future.

For now though, bask in the glory of a proper big-engined old-school sportscar. A car pitched against the Aston Martin Vantage and the Porsche 911 – another icon that’s just gone hybrid.
