It may still be summer for a few more days but Amazon is already knee-deep in planning for the holidays.
The massive online retailer announced Tuesday that it was seeking to hire 6,000 employees in Michigan “to help deliver great holiday experiences.”
The company is looking to hire all sorts of workers, “full-time, seasonal, and part-time roles (are) available across Amazon’s operations, and seasonal employees will have an opportunity to transition to full-time positions.”
This is part of a company-wide effort to add 250,000 to its payroll this autumn and winter.
And knowing the challenges most employers are finding in filling empty positions, Amazon said it’s making its “largest-ever compensation investment this year toward additional pay, brining average pay to over $20.50 per hour in roles across customer fulfillment and transportation,” the company said in its announcement.
“A diverse range of roles—from packing and picking to sorting and shipping—are available to applicants from all backgrounds and experience levels,” the company said in its statement. “Customer fulfillment and transportation employees can earn, on average, over $20.50 per hour for those roles, and up to $28 depending on location.
“Interested candidates can see hiring locations and open positions at amazon.com/apply.”
There are numerous fulfillment centers throughout Metro Detroit, including large facilities in Pontiac at the former site of the Silverdome as well as in Shelby Township or Romulus.
Jobs at Amazon’s operations include stowing, picking, packing, sorting, shipping customer orders, and more, and many roles are seen as potential stars to long-term careers — inside the company or elsewhere. Jobs can pay between $17 and $28 per hour.
Beside pay and benefits, the company also touts its savings program as well as improved on-the-job safety training.
“The holiday season is always a special time at Amazon and we’re excited to hire 250,000 additional people this year to help serve customers across the country,” said John Felton, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations in the announcement. “Whether someone is looking for a short-term way to make extra money, or is hoping to take their first step toward a fulfilling and rewarding career at Amazon, there’s a role available for them.
“A fulfillment or transportation employee who starts with us today will see a 13% increase in pay over the next three years—likely more, including our annual wage investments—and that’s on top of offerings like pre-paid college tuition with Career Choice and health care benefits on day one.”
The company, which has opened 50 new fulfillment centers and deliver stations this year, also provides free deliveries for Prime customers, has developed the Alexa smart device technology, and runs online film, television and music streaming services.
