Bhubaneswar: The unique silver filigree work of Cuttack, Chandi Tarakasi, has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Utkalika-Odisha State Cooperative Handicrafts Corporation Limited had filed for the tag with Geographical Indication Registry, Chennai.“It is good the famous and intricate Chandi Tarakasi has got GI tag. I am thrilled because I had first suggested about the recognition, informed stakeholders, spread awareness and initiated efforts. But govt must rectify and amend the application to include gold filigree work for correct representation of Cuttack Tarakasi as we have gold and silver filigree worker groups,” said Anita Sabat, culture and GI researcher. Odisha govt had filed the application for GI tag of silver filigree in 2021.Filigree artisans of Odisha, especially from Cuttack, produce exquisitely patterned jewellery, decorative and utility items using silver wires. The traditional art thrives in many parts of Cuttack like Bania Sahi, Jaunlia Pati, Mansingh Patna, Shaikh Bazar and Naya Sarak. The craft is showcased during Durga Puja when artisans make huge silver tableaux in gold and silver filigree.
