Smoke billowing from a fire at a metal recycling centre on the Isle of Sheppey has led to warnings for people to keep doors and windows closed.

Plumes of smoke could be seen for miles across Swale after the fire broke out in Garrison Road in Sheerness, Kent.

Four fire engines were sent to the blaze, which was reported shortly after 11:00 GMT, along with a water carrier and rescue unit.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service said no injuries had been reported.

“People living or working near Garrison Road, Sheerness, and surrounding areas are advised to close windows and doors and avoid the area due to smoke still coming from the incident,” a spokesman said.

“Crews are continuing to extinguish the flames.”
