The force added that it received several calls from members of the public reporting the sight or smell of smoke, particularly in parts of Newham and east London.

“Although we believe these calls are linked to this fire, it’s important that you do call us if you suspect there may be a fire in your area”, it urged people.

The fire was brought under control by crews from Plaistow, East Ham, Poplar, Stratford and surrounding fire stations by 9.10am, but the Brigade said they will remain on scene throughout the morning and into the afternoon.

A 32-metre turntable ladder from Greenwich Fire Station is reportedly being used as a water tower to fight the fire from above. The drone team are also said to be providing assistance.

The cause of fire is yet unknown and will be investigated by London Fire Brigade.
