Federal Reserve Vice Chair Philip Jefferson, in remarks devoid of any mention of interest rate cuts, said on Tuesday “it will be appropriate to hold in place the current restrictive stance of policy for longer” if inflation fails to slow as expected.

Bank of America’s Q1 Results: Profits fall 18% on higher expenses, charge-offs
The Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank posted a profit of $6.67 billion, or 76 cents per share, compared with $8.2 billion, or 94 cents a share, in the same period a year earlier. BofA had to make a one-time $700 million payment to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. to help the agency replenish the deposit insurance fund.

Dow jumps 257 points at open as upbeat earnings obscure Mideast jitters
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 257.11 points, or 0.68%, at the open to 37,992.22.
The S&P 500 opened higher by 2.77 points, or 0.05%, at 5,064.59, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 28.64 points, or 0.18%, to 15,856.38 at the opening bell.

The short-term trend remains weak. But, having placed near the cluster support of around 22,000 levels, one may expect an upside bounce from the lows in coming sessions. Immediate resistance is at 22260 levels, said Nagaraj Shetti of HDFC Securities.

Morgan Stanley Q1 Results: Profit rises as investment banking rebounds
Morgan Stanley’s profit rose in the first quarter, lifted by a resurgence in investment banking led by equity underwriting where revenue more than doubled. The Wall Street bank on Tuesday reported net income of $3.4 billion, or $2.02 per diluted share, in the three months ended March 31. That compares with $3 billion, or $1.70 per share, a year earlier.

India benchmark bond yield at near 3-month high amid Mideast tensions
Government bond yields ended higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark bond yield touching a near three-month peak, on worries over the heightened conflict in the Middle East and receding bets of an early U.S. rate cut.
The rupee weakened by 0.15rs to 83.59 due to the strengthening of the US dollar index, which rose above 106$. This put pressure on the rupee, exacerbated by selling in the capital markets. Additionally, concerns over geopolitical issues in the Middle East added to the downward pressure on the rupee.

The Nifty Bank closed in the red for the third consecutive day on Tuesday, pushing the index below crucial support placed around 47,500 levels. It recouped some losses but closed 288 points lower at 47,484. The Nifty50, however, fell over 100 points to close below 22,200 levels.

Shanghai bourse widens trading limits on copper, gold, others
It will raise the trading bands for gold and silver contracts to 8% from 6% and 7%, respectively.
