Darley Street Market, which is set to house around 40 businesses, is expected to open this May.
The market will replace the city centre’s two existing markets – Kirkgate and Oastler.
Built on the site of the former Darley Street M&S, the building will have three floors – one selling non-food goods, one selling fresh food, and the top floor being the food court.
We asked our readers what they would like to see fill the units.
Many wanted to see something similar to what can be found in Leeds.
Asim Rashid said: “I would like to see an open market with stalls or something similar to the Trinity Kitchen.”
“Affordable and diverse food options like Leeds Market has,” said Theresa Taylor.
Glen McMahon added: “Something similar to Leeds Trinity Kitchen would be good.”
Others have suggested a more traditional feel to the new market.
Ammer Rahim said: “A proper greengrocer, excellent fruit and veg.”
Janet Andre added: “Traditional fruit, meat, and fish markets, I miss the really fresh stuff. Will always buy from independent business over supermarket chain.”
A range of different cuisines were also mentioned.
Anne-Laure Corcol said: “A salad bar! Running out of healthy lunch options in the city centre.”
Jàv Amiràt added: “Local bakers for sure, a good tea break with some sweet delight… yum yum.”

Martyn Senior said: “West Indian food please.”
Debbie Green added: “A decent shoe shop would be nice.”
“Great bakery store with artisan breads,” said Derrick Milnthorp.
Susan Meah added: “Mexican street food.”
