The 14th Oceania Aquatics Championships, which featured teams from a number of Oceanian countries, saw numerous new National Records over the five days of competition.
Fiji, the host nation, was led by ASU sophomore Tolu Young, who won three gold medals and contributed to four relay gold medals for Fiji.
Young won the 50 free (22.82), 100 free (51.42), and 50 fly (24.29) individually. He added from his personal best times in all three events, but he had a few strong relay splits, swimming 22.10 on the mixed 200 freestyle relay.
Bolstered by Young, the Fiji team broke two Oceanian Championship records. Their first came in the mixed 200 freestyle relay where Grace Khelan (26.60), Hansel McCaig (22.81), Tolu Young (22.10), Anahira McCutcheon (25.32) swam 1:36.83. This swim was also a new Fiji National Record time.
There were four other meet records set over the five-day meet including one more from Fiji. Samuel Yalimaiwai swam a personal best 28.22 in the men’s 50 breaststroke prelims. In the final, he swam 28.26 to win the gold medal, just off his lifetime best time.
The other two men’s breaststroke events also saw new meet records, both set by Cook Islands’ Jacob Story. In the 100 breaststroke, he swam 1:01.81 and in the 200 breaststroke he swam 2:15.00. These swims were both off his personal bests of 1:01.70 and 2:14.41 respectively.
The final meet record came from Tahiti’s Nael Roux in the men’s 800 freestyle. He swam 8:20.94 to win the event by 11 seconds over Australia’s Lachlan Evans who finished 2nd overall.
