Residents are invited to learn more about reverse mortgages during a free educational class hosted by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Yavapai College. “Munch & Learn: Reverse Mortgages, Reimagined” will take place on Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the Prescott Campus, Building 3-119, located at 1100 E. Sheldon St. in Prescott. An online option is also available.
The session will be led by Traci Ranic of Frontier Financial of Arizona and will focus on helping homeowners, retirees, and those planning for retirement better understand how reverse mortgages work. Attendees will learn the facts behind common myths and explore how a federally insured Home Equity Conversion Mortgage, or HECM, can support long-term retirement goals.
Ranic shared a personal story about helping her father navigate financial challenges after her mother entered assisted living. She explained that her father struggled to cover monthly expenses and had been taking large withdrawals from his retirement account, creating additional tax burdens. After exploring a reverse mortgage, the family used the funds to help pay for assisted living and later in-home care, while preserving other retirement assets.
According to Ranic, the reverse mortgage provided her father with financial relief and flexibility during a difficult time. She also noted that, after his passing, the remaining estate funds remained available to beneficiaries, dispelling the common misconception that reverse mortgages leave families with nothing.
The upcoming class offers an opportunity to hear from Ranic directly, ask questions, and better understand whether a reverse mortgage may be a helpful option for future planning.
