Early morning fire burns Northwest Portland warehouse

Portland firefighters responded to a large fire at an industrial property in Northwest Portland early Thursday morning, containing the blaze before it could spread to several nearby buildings.
Portland Fire & Rescue crews were called shortly after 5 a.m. to the area of Northwest Nicolai Street and 30th Avenue after reports of a fire at a commercial property. A second wave of firefighters was requested because of the size of the fire and the risk that it could spread to other industrial buildings.
When firefighters arrived, flames were burning heavily along the outside of a warehouse and had begun moving upward into the building. The warehouse, about 40 by 60 feet, was connected to a larger shop containing industrial equipment used to make wooden and metal molds for tools.
Firefighters entered the warehouse while others worked from the roof to reach the fire inside the roof structure. They cut openings in the roof to get water directly onto the flames and stopped the fire from moving into the connected shop.
The fire was nearly under control within about 15 minutes of firefighters arriving. Because the main fire had been contained, most of the additional crews requested earlier were released and returned to their stations.
No firefighters or civilians were reported injured.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
