BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) – Federal court records show a convicted felon and a Texas woman have been arrested in Baldwin County. Investigators say a traffic stop uncovered suspected mail theft, stolen IDs and credit cards, and weapons.
According to federal documents filed this week, on May 26, a Baldwin County Sheriff’s deputy saw a BMW with a Texas license plate following another vehicle too close and too fast.
Court documents say after pulling over the driver, the deputy saw 27-year-old Marco Antonio Tavarez in the driver seat, 23-year-old Jalyssa Nadine Delgado in the passenger seat, and a meth pipe in plain view.
Records show deputies removed Tavarez and Delgado from the vehicle. Inside the car, investigators say they found checks, money orders, Texas drivers licenses, and unopened first-class mail belonging to other people from Texas and Missouri.
Investigators also found a drone, packaged phones, two handguns and counterfeit “arrow keys.” Arrow keys are used by the U.S. Postal Service to open and close various mailboxes.
Court records also show Delgado was a member of a mail-theft group in San Antonio, Texas which uses these keys. Tavarez told deputies his role in the group is to help activate the debit and credit cards stolen from the mail.
These federal records also show Tavarez was convicted in a 2019 case of human smuggling and assaulting a border patrol agent with a deadly weapon. He was sentenced in 2020 to 70 months in prison.
Court records show BCSO deputies reviewed debit and credit cards found in the vehicle and contacted a victim over the phone. The victim said she was expecting a card to be delivered to her through the mail and two weeks prior, the gates community where she lives in Texas was targeted by mail thieves.
Jail records show Tavarez is charged with four felonies including trafficking stolen identities, mail fraud, and possession of burglar’s tools.
Delgado is facing six charges including mail fraud, trafficking stolen identities, and drug paraphernalia.
It’s unclear when they’ll go before a judge.
