Melrose Community Council hosted representatives of the city of Melrose, in Massachusetts, in a bid to reinforce relationships between the namesake areas.
It comes following widespread positive relations between American citizens and Tartan Army supporters during Scotland’s participation in the FIFA World Cup last summer.
A meeting was arranged between Melrose Community Council members and former mayor of Melrose Paul Brodeur.
There, a proclamation was signed to reinforce relations between the two areas, signed by current mayor Jennifer Grigoraitis.
It read: “The market town of Melrose, Scotland boasts a centuries-long history of culture commerce, and sport.
“The city of Melrose, Massachusetts owes its name to the Scottish town, whose rolling hills inspired the naming of this hilly community outside of Boston.
“The city of Melrose, Massachusetts and its namesake town of Melrose, Scotland shares bonds of history, heritage and culture.
“The recent renewal of friendship between the peoples of greater Boston and the Scottish nation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup has inspired renewed interest and connection between our residents.
“I, Mayor Grigoraitis, do hereby proclaim and affirm the bonds of fellowship between the people of Melrose, Massachusetts and Melrose, Scotland.
“I, Mayor Grigoraitis, extend the sincerest greetings of goodwill to our Scottish cousins and forebears to be delivered by my predecessor, former mayor Paul Brodeur, to the people of Melrose, Scotland.”
The meeting was attended by Melrose Community Council chair William Windram and fellow member Val Millar.
From the United States, former mayor Paul Brodeur was in attendance, joined by his wife Liz and son Sam.
The meeting was shared between wider members of the community council during its monthly meeting on Wednesday (August 26).
